Oil seals increasingly had to meet higher requirements, which is why PTFE was developed in 1980. This variant can better withstand higher engine speeds, higher oil temperatures, longer oil intervals and modern lubricants. In addition, the oil seal contains a wider contact surface, which ensures less wear.
Types of oil seals
PTFE is special in that a pre-tensioned spring is not required. This is because the material returns to its original shape when heated, also known as the shape-memory polymers (SMPs) effect. These oil seals are also supplied as integrated parts, where it only needs to be installed as one component.
These types are made with a metal outer case and a PTFE lip. They are suitable for a wide range of temperatures from -90 °C to +260 °C.These lip seals can also be used for higher pressures of up to 10 bar (special types up to 25 bar) and rotational speeds of up to 40-45 m/s. Certain grades of PTFE are suitable for use in pharmaceutical and food applications. One important point is that PTFE lip seals do require a shaft with a harder, smoother finish.


The sealing lip is always made of a rubber or synthetic material. For oil seals with a rubber outer case (R, RST, GR, GRST), the rubber quality of the sealing lip and the outer case are the same.


This technique is used when the seal depth must match the housing surface precisely. It involves stopping the installation tool at the machined housing face. Ensure the tool is perfectly perpendicular to the shaft for best results. This technique is ideal for applications requiring exact seal positioning relative to the housing face.
